Starting School at Somersham
If you would like your child to attend our school, please see full details of our admission arrangements below.
At Somersham we provide a high quality of care and education in a safe, stimulating, creative, well planned and organized learning environment, giving every child the opportunity and guidance to develop to their full potential. Ofsted inspectors say that ‘Somersham Primary is a happy and harmonious place where pupils feel cared for’.
Who cares for me?
One of the great strengths of Somersham Primary school is our pastoral system. We believe that your children thrive when they know that the adults caring for them will listen to their needs and help them in times of difficulty. On joining Somersham Primary school your child will have a dedicated class teacher, teaching assistant and team leader with who you can discuss your child's welfare. In reception classes, Year 6 buddies are on hand to help children settle in at break and lunchtimes and Year 6 monitors are attached to all classes spending wet playtimes helping your child play with others and leading games.
Team leaders work closely with the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and school nurse to provide the best education for your child. Parents may also arrange, through the SENCO or class teachers, to consult the school parent support service.
All staff are regularly trained in First Aid and many also have responsibility for staffing our play time and lunch time First Aid rooom. Please expect a sticker and written record from us if your child has had an injury during the day.
How is my view heard?
We encourage as strong a link as possible between school, staff and parents. We provide regular updates on your child's progress through reports and parent consultation evenings. There is a team leader in each team who oversees our provision and who will help resolve any particularly difficult matters.
We believe in listening to our pupils and have regular meetings for our school and eco council which includes children from all classes. The children can put forward ideas to discuss and discussions range from healthy eating to new ideas for extra curricular activities.
We believe in close partnership with our parents and have a particularly active and successful Parents and Friends Association who provide social opportunities and support the school by fund raising by running events at school.
